Thinking Beyond the Next Election Cycle
The decisions we make today shape the landscapes, communities and ecosystems our grandchildren will inherit.
Yet many of our systems are designed for short-term outcomes.
AotearoaNZ2125 exists to create space for a different kind of conversation — one that asks what becomes possible when we think in centuries rather than years.
How might we redesign our settlements, food systems, transport, energy, freshwater, biodiversity and communities to thrive in a changing climate?
How do we move beyond crisis response and toward future design?
Inspired by long-term planning models internationally, and grounded in the values and wisdom of Aotearoa, this work seeks to create a shared vision for the next 100 years.
A future where:
- rivers are restored and thriving
- communities are resilient and connected
- food systems regenerate landscapes
- biodiversity is flourishing
- infrastructure works with nature, not against it
- people feel deeply connected to place
Because the future we want will not emerge by accident.
It must be intentionally designed.
Project Priorities
- Long-horizon future visioning
- Systems mapping and spatial thinking
- Future scenarios for Aotearoa
- Community imagination and participation
- Intergenerational resilience
