Plotting a Course to a Positive Future: Aotearoa NZ 2125

Aotearoa NZ 2125 is a long-horizon alliance of vision, action, and guardianship. It is a living consortium of academic institutions, economic development agencies, regional councils, mana whenua and nature-centred organisations across Aotearoa New Zealand, united by a 100-year vision through spatial planning that honours both te taiao (the natural world) and our collective future.

Rooted in the wisdom of place and guided by the unfolding needs of generations yet to come, Aotearoa NZ 2125 exists to design and prioritise nature-based solutions that restore, regenerate, and reimagine how we live with the land, the waters, and each other.

We work across five interwoven realms of transformation:

  • Adaptation to Climate Change – Supporting communities and ecosystems to adapt enable resilience, grounded in local knowledge, and guided by long-term insight.
  • Restoring Our Oceans and Waters – Returning life to our rivers, lakes, and moana (sea) through catchment-level care, indigenous stewardship, and regenerative practice.
  • Climate Neutral and Smart Cities – Reimagining urban environments as living systems—circular, connected, and aligned with nature’s rhythms.
  • Living Labs – Embedding innovation into the whenua, nurturing soils as the quiet foundation of ecological and economic resilience.
  • Environmental Resilience – Holding space for natural systems to thrive under pressure, and for communities to rise with clarity, courage, and care.

Aotearoa NZ 2125 is not simply a programme—it is a long vision made through shared responsibility, deep coordination, and radical patience. It is where science meets storytelling, policy meets place, and vision becomes lived reality.

Together, we hold the future lightly but firmly—so it may grow strong, with deep roots.
