Investing in Nature as Essential Infrastructure
For too long, nature has been treated as separate from our economy.
Something to protect when convenient.
Something to restore after damage.
But what if nature was recognised for what it truly is:
Infrastructure.
- Wetlands reduce flooding.
- Forests stabilise hillsides.
- Healthy soils store carbon and grow food.
- Coastal ecosystems buffer storms.
- Urban trees cool cities and improve wellbeing.
Nature is not an environmental “extra.”
It is foundational infrastructure that supports the resilience of our communities, economy and future prosperity.
AotearoaNZ2125 is exploring how nature-based solutions can reshape how we invest in resilience — from catchment restoration and biodiversity corridors to urban blue-green infrastructure and regenerative food systems.
We are also exploring emerging approaches to nature finance, including new models for attracting investment into long-term ecological restoration and landscape resilience.
The question is no longer:
Can we afford to invest in nature? But rather: Can we afford not to?
Project Priorities
- Nature-based solutions
- Catchment-scale resilience
- Ecosystem services and valuation
- Nature finance models
- Regenerative infrastructure thinking
- Climate adaptation through natural systems
